NA KANAKA 'AIHUE
(Men of Deceit)
(Queen Liliuokalani spoke these words when she addressed her people, referring to Lorrin A Thurston and the others that overthrew her)On January 16th and January 23rd, "Talk Story with Uncle Charlie" on KNUI AM 900, hosted by Kahu Charles K. Maxwell, Sr., will focus on the overthrow of Queen Liliu'okalani which occurred on January 17th, 1893, 111 years ago. On Nov. 23, 1993, President Clinton signed Public Law 103-150, apologizing for the role of the United States in the overthrow.
Uncle Charlie's guest on January 16 will be Thurston Twigg-Smith, the former Publisher and Chief Executive Officer of the Honolulu Advertiser. Mr. Twigg-Smith strongly feels that the overthrow of Queen Liliuokalani was the best thing to happen to Hawai'i, and that his grandfather Lorrin A. Thurston, one of the leaders in the overthrow, did the right thing. Mr. Twigg-Smith's book, "Hawaiian Sovereignty: Do the facts matter?" will be discussed on the show. "In the complexities of the historical facts surrounding the demise of the Hawaiian Kingdom, it is helpful to the listeners to hear opposing views on this important historical issue," Maxwell said.
On January 23, David Keanu Sai will be Uncle Charlie's guest. Mr. Sai served as lead agent in international arbitration proceedings at the Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Hague, Netherlands from 1999 to 2001. He will be graduating this semester with a master's degree in Political Science specializing in International Relations from U.H. Manoa. Uncle Charlie and Mr. Sai will also be joined by Scott Crawford, a Hana resident who has been active in Hawaii's sovereignty movement for over ten years, and maintains numerous related websites, including a regularly updated weblog of Hawaiian issues located at HawaiianKingdom.info. This show will cover the legality of the overthrow, annexation and statehood, which many people feel that the United States did in violation of international law, continuing to occupy Hawai'i illegally until today.
The show will air each Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon on KNUI AM 900.
